The Dirt on DIG

In 2016, I published DIG through George Mason University's Stillhouse Press, run at the time by the wonderful Marcos Martinez as publisher with Doug Luman as editor of my book, plus some of the most talented MFA students I've ever been around. That was the year I felt legit in my own head and the year the imposter syndrome was finally put to rest, fueled mostly by my US book tour and all the lessons I learned along the way (meaning: all the kind souls that took me in, showed me around, made me feel special). Until that point, I'd balanced the publisher and poet hats with the publisher hat covering my eyes more than the poet hat. With DIG, though, I took the publisher hat off, put on the poet drag completely, and leaned into things, whether I was performing for thousands of people at the Dodge Poetry Festival or for three people at the San Francisco Library. ("Don't worry if no one shows" I wrote in a later poem, published in the little chapbook Tourist. "You have shown.")
I want to use this space to preserve some of the praise and good press DIG received. I'll always be grateful to that book of gay love poems. My spell book, you might call it. Bonus points because it includes "Mirror Boys," which is one of the stickiest, sweetest poems I've ever written. Big shout out as well to Jonathan Kent Adams, who Stillhouse commissioned to create a layered text cutout cover for the first few print runs. But listen. Someone needs to sneak into the Stillhouse Press office and smuggle that original art from the wall and send it to me. I want it.
I also want to acknowledge that two of the wonderful poets who blurbed the book are no longer with us: Felice Picano and Maureen Seaton. Both Felice and Maureen put so much time and effort into mentoring young and young-at-heart writers. I will miss and love them forever.

Bryan Borland proclaimed on an electronic billboard in WeHo during National Poetry Month this year, his face in lights: "We grieve like we eat like we kiss / these lantern ways of our American south." The lines are from "Lonoke," one of several wonderful love poems in DIG, Borland's third poetry collection. DIG makes it clear that Borland is indeed a gay man from the "American south," specifically, Arkansas. The fight for gay rights in Arkansas has been a long, rough road. As far as I know, Bryan Borland is Arkansas' first notable out gay poet. In 2015, the Arkansas Times published Borland's poem "Dive," in which two men who "wear only what we have to today, ragged/ old shirts and shorts that show we're/ interested in being men" walk through a terrifically hot (as in a hundred degrees) city, and the poem ends with a hot (as in très sexy) image of the two men screwing. DIG is a brave, loving, and lovely collection, a poignant shedding of any Arkansas-inflicted remnants of internalized homophobia, and a celebration of the poet's marriage. The love poems speak louder and more joyously than the poet's evangelical neighbors in the Bible Belt. "We know there will be gossip/ between the pews," but the love between the poet and his beloved husband Seth is palpable enough to charm the Christians. - GAY & LESBIAN REVIEW WORLDWIDE
DIG provides a poetic, honest look at a mature gay relationship.
